ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSFERS

Workshop fee is low, so accommodation is not included. TripAdvisor or AirBnb are great ways to book a hotel but even better, an apartment. Cheaper than you would expect. David: “For a 2 room apartment overlooking the ocean my family paid 70 euros per night. Amazing and you have a kitchen to cook. This was the last time we were there.”

For the first 4 paid students we offer a room in our rented historic villa. It will be amazing be together for a week hanging out and talking! One catch, you must pay for 7 nights. My family and Flavio will be staying for 7 nights and the home is expensive. So if you want one of the rooms then all you have to do is say yes and agree to $800 total accommodation costs for 7 nights. You can split this cost with another student if you wish if you want to share the room. Many rooms you can split the beds away from each other for room sharing. See the historic villa here: Villa Bruna on TripAdvisor.

Our advice on accommodation: look at a map of our villa and try to get a place within walking distance if you are not one of the first people to book our villa rooms. Shuttle to and from the Dubrovnik airport and house: Taxis are very available to the house. More info soon. Parking spaces: there are 4 parking spaces for rental cars. There are also some places to park along the street.

ADVANCED WEDDING WORKSHOP BY FLAVIO BANDIERA

14th / 17th APRIL 2016

The workshop in Italy will be the first course that I decided to organize by myself and in my hometown, Turin, at the moment the only Italian main city where over time I have not held any meeting. It will be so a new and a very special opportunity, in which 12 photographers will join me in a 4-day workshop between shots in wonderful location and beautiful models, including classroom for comparisons in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, with private shuttles for the transfers and an exclusive mentoring program for each participant.

GO TO ITALY WORKSHOP

It’s been a great pleasure to teach my new course as part of the event “Fotografia Europa 2010”. Sometimes, unexpectedly, what may seem just one of the many occasions devoted to photography in Italy proves to be a great laboratory for ideas, unique for size and quality.

A whole city, Reggio Emilia, turned into a Wonderland that as for some magic discovers its artistic and creative spirit by disclosing its most intimate and convivial places to more than a hundred thousand visitors. For a weekend shops and houses, as well as streets and squares, became scenes for pictures and videos of hundreds of artists. The resulting interest shown by a variegated audience, made of attentive experts and simple curious people, was extraordinary, and in this path through emotions, resulting from the illuminated fantasy of the organisers where time and space were deformed to make way to art, I tried to give my contribution as well. In collaboration with CNA Emilia Romagna, I took a group of local professionals with me in this personal imaginary journey, sharing inspirations and ideas on my interpretation of Wedding Photography. It was another great chance of meeting new, nice and well-trained colleagues, with whom I could share the feelings of a whole afternoon immersed in such a charming and enchanting frame.

Theme of Fotografia Europa 2010 is enchantment.

“Enchantment is for us the sense, the direction of a gaze still fascinated but not seduced, an astonished gaze, positive, facing forward and able to see differently and more in what it faces. A gaze that doesn’t get dragged by an excessive nostalgia, which on the other hand doesn’t stop at the analysis and reflection of the present, but questions, in such present, the marks of transformation and change. The unconscious is the topic of several discussions, where we fantasise or project our expectations and desires, but we left any serious reflection on imagination. Photographic image is a powerful medium for this type of reflection, because it gives back more than the experience of its subject, of what it is fixing: it includes the gaze that embraced it, the thought that wanted to give it back or that vanished in that simple remainder of reality. If we forget about the role of documenting, in addition to the symbolic value, every picture preserves something more, something we could define a “metaphorical aspect”

fotografia_europea_2010-1

But what would it be a metaphor of? Of what everyone wants and proposes, but first of all, a metaphor of life. That’s why when pictures move us, when they get us closer to what they ask us, we are watching them enchanted. We are interested in how photography can show things in a different way than how we think to see them, their generating stares that become different, or that find out how they have always been without knowing it. It is the presence of such stare and of a mind behind the eyes and the camera. It’s “thinking by images”, it’s the other face of the “optical unconscious”, the propositive strength of sensitivity. Which changes can the Image see and prefigure? Which metaphors can it anticipate? What meaning for life?”

CANON UK WORKSHOP

A wonderful experience lived near London (at Woburn) at an event organized by Canon UK in August 2015.
This was a “two days event” dedicated to the wedding photography and to the possibilities offered by this type of visual art.
During this workshop I was involved in describing some of the characteristics aspects of my photography and in different photography practice sessions with beautiful models in the beautiful surroundings of the abbey of Woburn.

Here you can see the official video of the event.

Video of the AE Academy 2013 “I Tre Tenori”, Italy

20 giugno 2015

You can find here the video of the AE Academy 2013 held in Pesaro, Italy, on November 9th and 10th. I want thank all the colleagues that took part to my meetings and to those held by David and Sam and, obviously, to Album Epoca for the wonderful (every year more complex) organisation.

You can find the group shot down here, (right click -> “save target with name…” to download in high definition).

See you again at the 2014 edition!

Shooting for fun in San Marino

Sam Sciarrino, David Beckstead, and I, found some time before the AE Academy 2013 “I tre tenori” to have some fun in San Marino, where we could shot in complete freedom with a couple of models, together with the families and two cameras filming the short clip you can see find in this post. Fun is guaranteed!

The workshop I held at Hobart, in the Australian region of Tasmania, was more than an out-of-town trip: I could there get in touch with so many colleagues living in the other side of the world. After more than a whole day of travel (and coming straight from a marriage in France) I received a wonderful welcome, and I could quickly get in the Australian “mood” thanks to the splendid organising skills of AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photograpy): they invited me as a mentor to the “AIPP Event”, the yearly event dedicated to professional photography.

As for the previous years, the event programme included several talks of Australian and American professionals (amongst which great names as Abraham Joffe, Jennifer B. Hudson, Annie Zanazanian, etc.) analysing different areas of photography, from naturalistic to reportage, art photography, sport… And for the first time as an “exception” an European photographer, myself. While giving my talk in the impressive Room 1 of the awesome Grand Chancellor, overlooking Hobart Harbour and the “Constitution Dock”, I could sense a great curiosity coming from the audience: I explained my relationship with wedding photography and gave a few observations and tips already discussed in previous events, trying to communicate and transmit the italian point of view on what I consider one of the most captivating jobs of the world.

The following day I held a practical course with shooting and post-production of the pictures with a small group of photographers, with whom I had an intense exchange of information and experience that confirmed my first impression: these Aussies are really good, they know photography very well (also because they have first-class institutes) and are aware of helding a top tier place in the world scene.
My experience has surely been tiring, but so exciting (Paris – Hobart – Rome in 5 days is no joke) and amongst the many feedbacks I received, there is one I would like to share with you.
But first, let me thank all those who followed me and went with me through all this unforgettable adventure.

“…for me the stand out presentation came from an unexpected quarter. An Italian wedding photographer, Flavio Bandiera has studios in Rome, Milan and Turin, his credentials cover the major photography Institutes and Associations and his speaking engagements are myriad. His images were contemporary and well designed and thought out; BUT it was the language he used to describe and illustrate his images. Bandiera’s command of language in describing the various aspects of creating imagery was akin to a lecture from the best of photography’s leading academics. Despite apologising for English being his second language, his list of terms was the best I have ever heard in the description of what we do as image makers. It is hoped that the AIPP includes his presentation among the video of demand list; as it will rival the best photographic lecturers in this country.
Ian Poole

Photography workshop in Tirana with Flavio Bandiera

Amongst the different training meetings I have been honoured to direct in 2013, I’m keeping into my heart the one, organised by EJ Album with the collaboration of Album Epoca, in Tirana, Albania which proved to be a country on the rise, quickly bridging the gap created in the past with the other countries of its area. You can sense this progress, as Tirana is living a period of great economic and social excitement, considering how it is becoming an attraction centre for capital investments and people from everywhere across the globe. Big companies and European multinational corporations are now opening branches in this area of Europe, well aware of the incredible upward trend the country is experiencing. And the Albanian professional photographers are no different from this trend.

My experience here was unmatched, as for the attentions and consideration I received. A huge number of people took part to my course, all of them were colleagues with a strong will to improve and to show to themselves and to the world how wedding photography is here a reality, not just documental but artistic as well.
The event received the attention of institutions and medias too: I was invited by the main TV channels – such as RTSH or Top Channel – for a live interview broadcast in the whole country and by several magazines, some of which just took a picture of me while I was having a drink in a bar.

It is not something that happens daily, indeed, and perhaps I am not used to this, but for the entire time I was in this country, I tried to communicate to the people around me the love I feel towards my job and the passion that I daily transmit in what I’m doing, always trying to see “one step further” regardless to those who think that this job is nothing but improvisation, insignificance and lack of any contents. But luckily this is not what Albania thinks.
